aftercare

info dump with all you need to know about taking care of your new tatty

2 types of protective covering

second skin

  • keep on 1-2 days

  • take off gently in shower

  • wash gently with warm, fragrant free soap and water in circular motions (open hand)

    • recommend goat antibacterial soap from chemist warehouse (around $2.50)

  • will look soupy/mildewy under film - this is normal as your body will push out any plasma and ink

  • once its removed, it should be at the peeling stage, apply a small amount of tattoo balm regularly

    • recommend dr pickles tattoo balm (around $12.50 from woolies)

  • before applying i will ask if there are any allergic reactions to adhesives/kinesiology tape/bandages

  • if you are allergic, please let me know and cling wrap will be used instead

  • if you also prefer having cling wrap, please let me know :))

  • in case your second skin comes off or is removed within the first 24 hours, follow the steps in
    cling wrap

cling wrap

  • keep covered with cling wrap for at least 1-2 hours after tattoo

  • wash gently with warm, soapy fragrant free soap a nd water in circular motions (open hand)

  • pat dry with clean paper towel

  • for the first 48 hours, repeat step 2 and 3 at least 3 times a day

    • hold off on applying aftercare balm (dry heal)

      • applying any balm/cream when the tattoo is still wet/fresh can cause the skin to be overwhelmed and unable to breathe - the perfect environment for infections!

      • your tattoo will normally heal as long as it’s washed regularly and kept dry so trust it to do it’s thing!

  • once tattoo begins to peel (around 72 hour mark) apply a tiny dwollop (no bigger than the tip of your finger) of tattoo balm and moisturise into skin

    • recommend dr pickles tattoo balm (around $12.50) from woolies)

DR PICKLES TATTOO BALM

IMPORTANT

during the first 48 hours, please make sure to:

  • wear washed, loose fitting clothing around tattoo

  • use fresh, clean towels and bedsheets

  • if you have a work uniform that rubs against the tattoo, please wash before wearing especially during this time!

  • infections commonly occur within the first 48 hours so it’s important to keep the tattoo clean, dry and able to breathe

during the whole 2-3 week healing stage:

  • no beach, pool or bath or any water/soaking activities besides showering

  • avoid rigorous exercise in the first few days

    • e.g. crossfit probably want to avoid, but a walk around the neighbourhood is ok!

  • your tattoo is going to be sensitive to touch and heat in the first few days so be gentle with the water pressure and heat

  • keep covered from the sun as it heals, apply sunscreen only to the tattoo in the peeling stage and beyond if exposed so they won’t fade over time

  • after the first few days the tattoo will start to peel and scab - do not pick at it!!!!

  • it’s going to get itchy as the new layers of skin are exposed underneath the tatty -
    do not scratch!

    • if the scratching becomes unbearable, it may be you need more tattoo balm in the area but if that fails, give the tattoo an open handed phat slap

depending on the style of tatty, heal times may vary but usually it will take around 2-3 weeks

if you follow all these steps coorectly you’re going to have one sexy tattoo

if you experience any of these symptoms please let me know asap and if unsure, visit a doctor:

intense pain; intense heat coming off the tattoo; pus; swelling that lasts more than 3 days; red lesions and red streaking around the area; itchiness
